Doctor Foster: A BBC series that shows how a woman Dr. Gemma Foster, played by Suranne Jones, uses her extreme intelligence and calculating mindset to get justice in a world where the chances of that are bleak. Problems with her marriage reveal a list of secrets that keep you hoping and hoping she gets the life she deserves. Jones plays the role in a cool, nonchalant way that reveals only to the audience her true intentions.

Thrillers: ‘Tis the Season to be Scared

1. The Beguiled: A movie released in 2017 that at first seems to be a harmless recount of the Civil War through the perspective of the students and teachers at a girls’ school in the south who encounter a wounded Yankee corporal. But as the movie progresses, the students and teachers take a sharp turn to the sinister. The once wounded corporal is brought back to health by the girls… Or so we think. The extremely dynamic characters and their eerie world mirror those of William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies.
2. Mulholland Drive: This thriller from 2001, directed by David Lynch, will leave your head spinning. Naomi Watts, the main character, does a fantastic job leading you through a series of parallel universes. Watts’ character struggles in differentiating between dream and reality when her reality is quite uncanny.
3. Get Out: Jordan Peele’s thriller exposes the racism and stereotyping through a scary lense. The movie poses this question: what happens when your closest friends and loved ones are the most dangerous people to be feared?

Other Movies

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox: A true work of art by brilliant director Wes Anderson. This stop-motion movie is quirky and charming, yet has a great deal of action, comedy and heroism. Seasoned actors George Clooney and Meryl Streep voice Mr. and Mrs. Fox, just adding to the extremely well written, directed, and acted-out movie. Mr. Fox and his family go on a journey, in hopes to effectively defend their home from evil corporations that wish, as Counting Crows puts it, “pave paradise and put up a parking lot.”
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel: Another of the many hidden gems in the works of Wes Anderson. The Grand Budapest Hotel adds a dash of comedy to a difficult situation for Gustave H, a hotel connoisseur who was framed for murder. He befriends a lobby boy at the hotel who becomes his trusted friend.
3. The Tail of Princess Kaguya: This movie, rated 100% by Rotten Tomatoes, shows the hardships of a young girl who deals with pressure to keep with tradition and her true hopes and desires. At a young age, Princess Kaguya faces many suitors, but truly loves only one boy from her childhood. This Japanese animated movie has indescribably beautiful scenes and messages. This tale is truly one to hear.
4. My Neighbor Totoro: This Japanese animated film is a critically acclaimed masterpiece by director Hayao Miyazaki. Totoro and two young girls take you on a journey through childhood imagination and whimsical creatures that sprout from the minds of children.
